Features of network monitoring system Nagio

Probably, any network administrator is familiar with the situation when tasks go one after another, and no other resources are allocated for their solution, except for those already available. And most often in a small organization these resources are the administrator himself and his working time. Thus, a situation like this often happens when an excessive load on the part of one of the departments leads to an overload of the corporate mail server. The administrator can find out about everything last, after several days of resource inactivity, when the proceedings are already at the level of the organization’s chief.

How to avoid a similar situation?

Of course, you can arrive in the morning and, as one of my old acquaintances, check the availability of your organization’s web server, look at the rest of the space on the disk in which the organization’s mail database is stored, see whether the IP address of the gate itself is in CBL list and similar systems for combating spam. Of course, the above list of tasks is far from complete. Each system administrator has a lot more. And if we consider that the information structures of some commercial organizations tend to grow, then even the uninitiated will immediately understand how important a properly functioning early warning system is for the administrative staff of the IT department. You must agree that it is much more pleasant to be able to receive messages, for example, on your mobile phone instead of manually monitoring a multitude of services. System variability, ability to scale
Nagios allows you to track a variety of network service failures, whether it is the lack of activity of your SMTP or POP server, web server failures or problems on any of the workstations on your network. Using the mechanisms for remote launch of test procedures, you can monitor free space and other critical for the health parameters of the computing resources entrusted to you. The capabilities of this system are expandable and quite scalable. It can be used both to monitor a single server that produces a network of a small organization consisting of only three computers on the Internet, and to monitor several dozen computers that perform various tasks. To do this, initially in the system introduced levels of abstraction from individual computing resources and users. For example, lists of hosts and contacts are combined into groups. This allows using the minimum number of configuration changes to change the recipients of certain types of messages about the unavailability of services, which is very convenient with the constant rotation of the administrative staff of your system and taking into account changes in the working hours of individual administrators. The complexity of setting up the system – an obvious fee for its capabilities

With all the tasks described, the Nagios network services availability monitoring system does an excellent job. Of course, one should not expect from a small article a detailed manual on the system, which the developers themselves do not recommend for use by impatient and incompetent, offering them, however, to seek help from qualified contractors. The complexity of setting is the lack of ready-made recipes for your system. And you should be prepared for the fact that, most likely, the initial launch of the system will give you a lot of errors and warnings. However, a properly configured monitoring system based on Nagios will allow you to keep your finger on the pulse of the situation once and for all in the network segment or department of the organization under your control. Thus, it can be said that all the difficulties in setting up the system will pay off in the long run. Nagios features

So, what is this system? Let’s start with a brief listing of its capabilities. Nagios allows you to:

control the availability of hosts, services and services both on the Internet and in the local network;
organize the grouping of computing and network devices according to functional, geographical and other characteristics;
create unique means of identifying the availability of the desired parameter of the operating system or device (including on a remote computer or network);
organize the processing, analysis and delivery of critical events for certain types of recipients;
specify the periods of activity of the administrative staff responsible for receiving reports on critical events in the system;
analyze failures using a variety of reports offered by the system’s web-interface.
A couple of words about the installation
First, of course, you need to install Nagios on your operating system. Unlike many packages supplied in working form, the Nagios monitoring system is more reliable to install from scratch. The point is not even that such tasks as ensuring uninterrupted operation are priority and are directly dependent on the well-being of your organization or business.
