Adobe for web developers
Adobe has no need for a special presentation – it is very well known among almost all users who have ever dealt with graphics processing. Of course, we are talking about the program Adobe Photoshop, which is used both for the preparation of professional images for printing, and for working with images for web pages. But, of course, Adobe was not limited to this application. Since almost everyone knows about the offline use of its packages, but they don’t often remember what, apart from Photoshop, it can please web developers, this article will try to fill the gap.
The Creative Suite package contains several applications that are now focused specifically on creating content, both graphic and textual, of mixed publications, regardless of how and where the materials will be placed.
If earlier Adobe programs were more focused on prepress, then now it is equally easy both to prepare web publications and to typeset regular magazines.
Photoshop is widely used for graphics processing. Adobe Photoshop is usually used when creating or correcting graphic materials for placement on websites. Thanks to powerful universal tools, as well as a large number of plug-ins, it can do almost anything with graphics. For example, if you need to post a photo report about an event on the website or simply prepare a drawing for an article, you can quickly do this in Photoshop. Adjust colors, balance, brightness, contrast, change the size and resolution of the image, make a collage or add visual effects, captions – all this is done in seconds. For example, all graphic materials for this article are prepared in this program.
Image Ready allows you to optimize graphics. In addition to directly working on creating and editing images, Adobe Photoshop is attractive for webmasters also with powerful image optimization tools. Previously, optimization was managed by another package – Adobe Image Ready, which comes with Adobe Photoshop from version 7.0. This is very convenient, since now all the necessary tools and capabilities are concentrated in one package. After editing the document for conversion, simply select the “Save for web …” command. Image Ready allows you to save graphics in GIF, JPEG, PNG formats, optimize the file size, control the number of colors in the palette, the degree of compression. A convenient preview window immediately shows the result of the compression, and the webmaster can visually evaluate the effect of a parameter on the size and quality of the image.
GoLive is a powerful web editor with a complex layout. The next Adobe web development product is Adobe GoLive CS. This is a powerful web editor that is included in the Creative Suite and, integrating closely with other programs, allows you to really solve all the tasks for preparing and publishing content in one package – whether it is a paper book or an Internet site. Fully visual WYSISWG-interface even without special knowledge to create web pages, using as source material files from other packages – graphic elements from Photoshop, text and layout from InDesign or InCopy, vector graphics from Illustrator, as well as complex documents in PDF format from Adobe Acrobat. To be honest, it’s impossible to surprise anyone just with a powerful web editor, and it’s doubtful that you could create something more powerful and professional than the same products from Macromedia. So GoLive does not claim to be the best web editor at all, and it’s difficult to develop really complex interactive websites. Its distinctive ability is precisely close integration with other packages, and if you consider that all the prepress preparation of any publication can be carried out in programs from Adobe, then the issue of the true positioning of GoLive is immediately resolved. Its main purpose is the rapid visual development of websites and their elements (individual pages or sections) according to the available layouts from the publisher. If the editors of the journal have a task to do together with a paper one and an electronic version for the site, then it is quite logical to use ready-made materials and pages to create materials for the site. And here GoLive is the ideal solution – in most cases it will cope with quite complex pages, rich with graphics and complex layout. Moreover, the pages will, on the one hand, be correctly optimized for the web presentation, and on the other, all or most of the features of the printed version of the publication can be saved. For example, color management is a sore spot for most web editors – it’s decided very well, thanks to integration with the color management system from Photoshop you can use CMYK graphics.
