From birch bark to hosting: How information storage has evolved with the development of humanity

Since ancient times, people have tried to keep information known to them – both for themselves and for posterity. At first, the methods of preserving information were the most primitive, but over time a letter appeared, new technologies and modern materials, and today you can save almost any amount of information with one click of a computer mouse.

Ancient inventions

Even the ancient people, who did not have a written language yet, were able to leave behind themselves information, thanks to which modern scientists can draw conclusions about what life was like many centuries ago. As a rule, these are cave paintings – these are simple subject drawings telling about everyday life, hunting, and rituals.

The emergence of writing was a real breakthrough in the preservation of information. The first to learn to write the Sumerians. Their writing was called cuneiform writing, and a pointed stick and clay tablets were used for writing. They wrote on the plates while they were wet, after which they were dried and kilned. It was this kind of heat treatment that made them very strong, that they could survive for many millennia and reach our times.

To record the most important information used lead, and sometimes gold plates. Most often they chose cheaper material. The characters that are present on such tablets are significantly different from modern writing, and yet modern scientists have been able to figure out what these records tell. Some plates of lead, found by scientists, were connected to each other, thereby forming a semblance of modern books.

In ancient Russia, when they still did not know about the existence of paper, they wrote on birch bark. Writings on this material are called birch bark. It is believed that birch bark has been used to store information since ancient times. A small amount of such works reached us, for the most part Old Believers’ books turned out to be them, in the creation of which stratified bark was used. Most of the ancient birch bark scientists were found in Novgorod, since it is this place with its climate that is considered the most favorable for the preservation of such ancient documents.

In the 15th century, paper was already widely spread. This material began to be used for small records, then individual leaves were collected in whole books. Nowadays, this material is actively used by each person to create notes, textbooks are drawn up on it, books are printed, etc.

Archives and libraries were engaged in the storage of materials with important information at all times. The oldest libraries include the library of the Assyrian king Ashshurbanipal and the Library of the Monastery of St. Catherine. The first was founded in the 7th century BC, which scientists discovered in the middle of the 19th century during excavations near the Euphrates. It contained the Babylonian and Sumerian texts. It was created by Tsar Ashshurbanipal specifically to ensure the safety of these texts.

The second oldest is the library of the monastery of St. Catherine, which is located at the foot of Mount Sinai in Egypt. A large number of ancient documents are stored here: more than 3.3 thousand manuscripts, 5 thousand books and 1.7 thousand scrolls, which were compiled in different languages.

Nowadays, the preservation of information has ceased to be a problem, using different methods. Continue to publish and sell printed books. Recently, they have become less popular, since it has become possible to use electronic books and it is much more convenient, as hundreds and even thousands of such books can be downloaded into one device, while only a few regular printed books can be problematic. .

With the development of computer technology for storage began to use electronic media. Previously, they were floppy disks, then disks, now they are flash drives and external hard drives. Such devices are convenient for transferring information. However, any such item for storing information cannot be called reliable, there is always a chance of losing data for some reason.

You can avoid losing very important information by storing it on the Internet. There are several ways and the most popular of them is hosting acquisition. In fact, to buy hosting means to acquire a place on the server to store personal information or to create a website. To keep a personal blog, you can choose a free hosting, and if you plan to have a serious Internet resource, then you should contact a trusted provider and maybe even choose a VPS / VDS server that fits specific requirements.
